Tobacco Prevention and Control Program

At Sargent County District Health Unit, we follow the mission statement and the goals of the North Dakota Comprehensive Tobacco Prevention and Control State Plan.

Mission

The mission of the Tobacco Prevention and Control Plan is to improve and protect the health of North Dakotans by reducing the negative health and economic consequences of the state's number-one cause of preventable disease and death – tobacco use.

Goal

The goal of the TPCP is to reduce disease, disability, and death related to tobacco use by:

  • Eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Promote quitting tobacco use.
  • Build capacity and infrastructure to implement a comprehensive evidence based tobacco prevention and control program.
  • Identifying and eliminating tobacco-related disparities among specific population groups.

The Sargent County District Health Unit Tobacco Prevention Program offers the following services and programs:

  • Educate the public on the danger of the use of tobacco products including electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Preventing the initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults.
  • Provide current information to state and local policy makers and community members regarding current issues in tobacco control.
  • Offer tobacco cessation counseling and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to Sargent County residents who qualify for the program.
  • Assist community members in enrolling in NDQuits, which is North Dakota's tobacco quit line service.
  • Work with community organizations to implement tobacco-free policies.
  • INDEPTH and the NOT programs are two programs that we offer through the American Lung Association.
